ECDIS refers to Electronic Chart Display and Information system and this is an electronic system that is used in ships and marine vessels to help them in their navigation. ECDIS will be able to integrate navigational position and ship sensor ENCs or electronic navigational charts. From 1995 this electronic format is accepted as equivalent to paper chart by International Maritime Organization. Paper chart is replaced by this electronic chart in all marine vessels. ECDIS can reduce marine accidents that normally result out of human mistakes that happen due to fatigue and work load. ECDIS is an automated system and does not depend on the alertness of the mariners. Moreover, with this navigational tool it is possible to get 24 hour positioning of the marine vessels. ECDIS saves the mariners from endless chart work giving them more time to handle the problems better. |

| Marine LCD monitors are used to display the electronic charts after the ECDIS approval and this displays information compiled from radar and GPS. Today paper charts are replaced by electronic charts displayed by ECDIS monitors. IMO has certain specifications for this ECDIS monitors and only monitors that are compliant can be used for this purpose. It is just not enough to be IMO compliant, these monitors should also be reliable because ECDIS monitors guides the ship throughout its journey, from the start till the end. So hardware reliability is of utmost importance here. Since the vessel will be totally dependent on the display unit to decide the right course at any given moment, even temporary malfunction can affect the ships or other marine bodies that uses ECDIS greatly. |
Not all marine displays are ECDIS compliant so it is important to ensure that the displays used meet the required standards for optimum performance. To meet this purpose industrial grade rugged displays are used as ECDIS monitors. These monitors should be waterproof as it is used in marine environments. As they will be exposed to harsh weather conditions they should be able to operate in hot weathers and extremely cold conditions without losing out on their performance. Especially in lower operating temperatures the response rate of the LCD displays will be slowed down and such problems should be taken care by the display manufacturers. The ECDIS monitors should also function well in highly humid conditions which are common in marine environments. There are very few marine display solution providers who market reliable ECDIS monitors that meet all the specifications and one such manufacturer is Nauticomp. They have been providing marine display solutions for a number of years and their products come with ISO 9001:2000 standard. They are known for their effectiveness and they meet all IMO specifications. You can download full product specifications of ECDIS monitors from www.nauticomp.com. The quality of their products has gained them global recognition. Their displays are sunlight readable and also NVIS compatible. Sunlight readable monitors can be used in extremely bright outdoor environments and NVIS monitors are used for night operations with low backlight. ECDIS has certainly made marine navigation a much easier task by taking the charting load off the mariners back. |
