The silly naiveté of the Disney originals is a ripe target for satire, but the filmmakers have mostly resisted. The new film, opening today, plays like a sequel to those wholesome 1970s family favorites, an enjoyable, giggly night at the movies. Herbie, a '63 VW Beetle with a life of his own, was a hero to preteens in those innocent times. He drove himself to unlikely racing victories against scheming competitors and protected his human caretakers, Dean Jones and Buddy Hackett, by urinating oil, belching exhaust and swinging door wallops at their adversa
